I have not used these yet, but the quality appears to be fine and I’m happy with the value. The blades are clearly strong and flexible, as well. However, my sole reason for choosing these particular large palette knives was to get what appeared to be a deep offset, the distance between the handle and blade created by the bent metal piece. I want to skim my painting surface with the flat blade flush against the canvas but without also rubbing my knuckles in the paint. Of the large knives that I found online, these appeared to have the largest offset, but I was disappointed when I received them. I suppose I can make them work by holding them by my fingertips instead of gripping them in my palm, but I’m still going to be looking for something better.Additionally, when I first prepped the knives for use, I found that the edges of the blades had black paint on them, presumably residual from the handle coloring. The black substance rubbed off on wet paper towels, so I’m sure this would (slightly) contaminate paint the first couple of uses, as well. Just to be sure, I wiped/scraped the paint off the edges before using them. Careful – some of these edges are sharp! Speaking of which, the pointy one is so sharp it literally is a knife – be careful using it!1 MONTH UPDATE: I’m only using the square palette knife at the moment (the sole reason I bought the set), but I have totally adapted to using it with my fingers (vs. holding it in the palm of my hand). I’ve come to love this palette knife and I’m changing my rating to 5 stars. It is so smooth and responsive to pressure that I’m also using it now to smooth out thick layers of gesso on canvas panels. My technique is to apply a thick coat of gesso to each panel with a 3″ brush and then use the knife to spread and smooth it out just like a float for concrete. Though each knife swath leaves ridges in the gesso at the edges, the surface beneath the knife is left super smooth. I simply sand away the ridges with 220 grit sandpaper and lots of water once the gesso is dry. The result is a panel with a hard, super smooth surface with no canvas weave texture.
